Ch 3 Verse 1-2 Verse

५.३ तृतीयोऽध्यायः । भगवतीमाहाम्ये दैत्यसैन्याद्योगः । व्यास उवाच । एवं स महिषो नाम दानवो वरदर्पितः । प्राप्य राज्यं जगत्सर्वं वशे चक्रे महाबलः ॥ १ ॥ पृथिवीं पालयामास सागरान्तां भुजार्जिताम् । एकच्छत्रां निरातङ्कां वैरिवर्गविवर्जिताम् ॥ २ ॥
English Translation
Vyāsa said :-- The very powerful Asura Mahiṣa, puffed up with vanity on his getting the boon, obtained sovereignty and brought the whole world under his control! He, being the paramount power, began to protect the sea-girt earth acquired by the power of his own arms, over which he had the sole sovereignty, there being no other rival king nor any cause of the slightest fear.

सेनानीश्चिक्षुरस्तस्य महावीर्यो मदोत्कटः । धनाध्यक्षस्तथा ताम्रः सेनायुतसमावृतः ॥ ३ ॥
English Translation
His Commander-in-Chief was then the very powerful Cikṣura, maddened with pride; and Tāmra was in charge of the Royal Treasury, guarded by many soldiers.

असिलोमा तथोदर्को बिडालाख्यश्च बाष्कलः । त्रिनेत्रोऽथ तथा कालबन्धको बलदर्पितः ॥ ४ ॥
English Translation
There were, then, many generals Asilomā, Viḍāla, Udarka, Vāskala, Trinetra, Kāla, Bandhaka and others, very proud, and each in charge of his own corps respectively and occupying this sea-girt earth.

एते सैन्ययुताः सर्वे दानवा मेदिनीं तदा । आवृत्य संस्थिताः काममृद्धां सागरमेखलाम् ॥ ५ ॥ करदाश्च कृताः सर्वे भूमिपालाः पुरातनाः । निहता ये बलोदग्राः क्षात्रधर्मव्यवस्थिताः ॥ ६ ॥
English Translation
O king! The powerful kings that reigned before were made subservient and tributary; and those, that fought valiantly befitting the Kṣattriya line, were slain by Mahiṣa.

ब्राह्मणा वशगा जाता यज्ञभागसमर्पकाः । महिषस्य महाराज निखिले क्षितिमण्डले ॥ ७ ॥
English Translation
The Brāhmaṇas over the earth became subservient to Mahiṣa and gave their Yajña offerings to him.

एकातपत्रं तद्राज्यं कृत्वा स महिषासुरः । स्वर्गं जेतुं मनश्चक्रे वरदानेन गर्वितः ॥ ८ ॥
English Translation
When that Mahiṣāsura got the sole sovereign sway of this world, he, proud of his boons, desired to conquer the Heavens.

प्रणिधिं प्रेषयामास हयारिस्तु शचीपतिम् । स सन्देशहरं शीघ्रमाहूयोवाच दैत्यराट् ॥ ९ ॥
English Translation
Then Mahiṣa, the Lord of the Daityas, desirous to send an envoy to Indra, the Lord of Śacī, instantly called for the messenger and spoke to him thus :--

गच्छ वीर महाबाहो दूतत्वं कुरु मेऽनघ । ब्रूहि शक्रं दिवं गत्वा निःशङ्कः सुरसन्निधौ ॥ १० ॥
English Translation
Go, O hero! O valiant one! to Heaven. Act as my messenger and tell Indra fearlessly thus :--
Ch 3 Verse 11-13 Verse

मुञ्च स्वर्गं सहस्राक्ष यथेष्टं गच्छ मा चिरम् । सेवां वा कुरु देवेश महिषस्य महात्मनः ॥ ११ ॥ स त्वां संरक्षयेन्नूनं राजा शरणमागतम् । तस्मात्त्वं शरणं याहि महिषस्य शचीपते ॥ १२ ॥ नोचेद्वज्रं गहाणाशु युद्धाय बलसूदन । पूर्वैर्जितोऽसि चास्माकं जानामि तव पौरुषम् ॥ १३ ॥
English Translation
:-- “O thousand-eyed one! Quit the Heavens; go anywhere you like, or offer your service to the high-souled Mahiṣa! He is the lord; and if you take refuge unto him, he will certainly protect you. Therefore, O Lord of Śacī, better seek the protection of Mahiṣa. If, O Balasūdana! Not willing, wield your Vajra at once; we know your powers; you were, in days of yore, conquered by our ancestors.
Ch 3 Verse 14 Verse

अहल्याजार विज्ञातं बलं ते सुरसङ्घप । युध्यस्व व्रज वा कामं यत्र ते रमते मनः ॥ १४ ॥
English Translation
O chief of the Sūras! You are the paramour of Ahalyā; your strength is well known, give battle or go anywhere you like.”
Ch 3 Verse 15-16 Verse

व्यास उवाच । तच्छुत्वा वचनं तस्य शक्रः क्रोधसमन्वितः । उवाच तं नृपश्रेष्ठ स्मितपूर्वं वचस्तदा ॥ १५ ॥ न जानेऽहं सुमन्दात्मन् यतस्त्वं मददर्पितः । चिकित्सां सङ्करिष्यामि रोगस्यास्य प्रभोस्तव ॥ १६ ॥
English Translation
Vyāsa said :-- Hearing the messenger’s words, Indra became very indignant and laughed and said :-- I did not know, O you stupid, that you were maddened with vanity; I will shortly give medicines for your master’s disease.
Ch 3 Verse 17-19 Verse

अतः परं करिष्यामि मूलस्यास्य निमूलनम् । गच्छ दूत तथा ब्रूहि तस्याग्रे मम भाषितम् ॥ १७ ॥ शिष्टैर्दूता न हन्तव्यास्तस्मात्त्वां विसृजाम्यहम् । युद्धेच्छा चेत्समागच्छ त्वरितो महिषीसुत ॥ १८ ॥ हयारे त्वद्बलं ज्ञातं तृणादस्त्वं जडाकृतिः । शृङ्गयोस्ते करिष्यामि सुदृढं च शरासनम् ॥ १९ ॥
English Translation
Now I will extirpate him by the roots; wise persons do not slay messengers; I therefore let you go. Better go and tell him what I say :-- “Son of a buffalo! If you are willing to fight, better come and do not delay. O Enemy of horse! (Buffaloes and horses are always at war with each other) Your strength is well known to me; you are a grass eater and your appearance is stupid, idiotic; out of your horns I will make a good bow. You depend on your horns for your strength; that I well know.
Ch 3 Verse 20-21 Verse

दर्पः शृङ्गबलात्तेऽस्ति विदितं कारणं मया । विषाणे ते परिच्छिद्य संहरिष्यामि तद् बलम् ॥ २० ॥ यद् बलेनातिपूर्णस्त्वं जातोऽसि बलदर्पितः । कुशलस्त्वं तदाघाते न युद्धे महिषाधम ॥ २१ ॥
English Translation
You are clever in striking with your horns; you don’t know anything about warfare; therefore I will out off your both the weapons and render you powerless. You are very much puffed up with vanity due to that.”
Ch 3 Verse 22 Verse

व्यास उवाच । इत्युक्तोऽसौ सुरेन्द्रेण स दूतस्त्वरितो गतः । जगाम महिषं मत्तं प्रणम्य प्रत्युवाच ह ॥ २२ ॥
English Translation
Vyāsa said :-- Indra having spoken thus, the messenger quickly returned to his haughty master Mahiṣa and saluting, spoke :--
Ch 3 Verse 23 Verse

दूत उवाच । राजन्देवाधिपः कामं न त्वां विगणयत्यसौ । मन्यते स्वबलं पूर्णं देवसैन्यसमावृतः ॥ २३ ॥
English Translation
The messenger said :-- Indra counts you not even a fig, as he is surrounded by his Deva forces and considers himself quite sufficient.
Ch 3 Verse 24 Verse

यदुक्तं तेन मूर्खेण कथमन्यद् ब्रवीम्यहम् । प्रियं सत्यं च वक्तव्यं भृत्येन पुरतः प्रभोः ॥ २४ ॥
English Translation
It ought one’s servant to speak true and pleasant before one’s master; how can I utter the words before my master, that are spoken by that brute Indra.
Ch 3 Verse 25 Verse

प्रियं सत्यं च वक्तव्यं प्रभोरग्रे शुभेच्छुना । इति नीतिर्महाराज जागर्ति शुभकारिणी ॥ २५ ॥
English Translation
Whereas the well known maxim reigns in my mind withal that I am your well-wishing servant and I ought to speak truth before you, my master, and that truth is to be pleasant to hear also.
Ch 3 Verse 26 Verse

केवलं चेत्रियं ब्याज ते कार्य भाविष्यति । परभं च न वक्त्वं कदाचिच्छुभमिच्छता ॥ 26 ॥
English Translation
If pleasant words I speak only, then I fail in my duty; at the same time, harsh words ought not to be spoken by me, your sincere well-wisher.

केवलं चेत्प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ते कार्यं भविष्यति । परुषं च न वक्तव्यं कदाचिच्छुभमिच्छता ॥ २६ यथा रिपुमुखाद्वाचः प्रसरन्ति विषोपमाः । तथा भृत्यमुखान्नाथ निःसरन्ति कथं गिरः ॥ २७ ॥ यादृशानीह वाक्यानि तेनोक्तानि महीपते । तादृशानि न मे जिह्वा वक्तुमर्हति कर्हिचित् ॥ २८ ॥
English Translation
My Lord! The cruel poison-like words that come from the mouth of an enemy, how can I, a servant of yours, utter those harsh sayings! O Lord of the Earth! I will never be able to utter those rude sayings that Indra has spoken.

व्यास उवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य हेतुगर्भं तृणाशनः । भृशं कोपपरीतात्मा बभूव महिषासुरः ॥ २९ ॥ समाहूयाब्रवीद्दैत्यान्क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः । लाङ्गूलं पृष्ठदेशे च कृत्वा मूत्रं परित्यजन् ॥ ३० ॥
English Translation
Vyāsa said :-- Hearing the messenger’s words full of meaning the grass-eater Mahiṣa Dānava got very angry and, waggling his tail behind his back, passed urine; then his eyes reddened with anger, he called the Dānavas before him and said :--
Ch 3 Verse 31 Verse

भो भो दैत्याः सुरेन्द्रोऽसौ युद्धकामोऽस्ति सर्वथा । बलोद्योगं कुरुध्वं वै जेतव्योऽसौ सुराधमः ॥ ३१ ॥
English Translation
O Dānavas! The Lord of the Devas is firmly resolved on battle; therefore collect your forces; we will have to conquer that devil, the chief of the Sūras.
Ch 3 Verse 32 Verse

मदग्रे को भवेच्छूरः कोटिशश्चेत्तथाविधाः । न बिभेम्येकतः कामं हनिष्याम्यद्य सर्वथा ॥ ३२ ॥
English Translation
Who can stand for him a my rival here! If hundreds and thousands of warriors like Indra come I do not fear any of them at all; O Dānavas, we will thoroughly put a end to him.
Ch 3 Verse 33 Verse

शरः शान्तेष्वसौ नूनं तपस्विषु बलाधिकः । बलकर्ता हि कुहको लम्पटः परदारहृत् ॥ ३३ ॥
English Translation
His heroism is before those only that are peaceful and quiet before the ascetics that have become lean and thin by the penances; he is licentious and can only seduce other’s wives by craftiness and arts.
Ch 3 Verse 34 Verse

अप्सरोबलसम्मत्तस्तपोविघ्नकरः खलः । छिद्रप्रहरणः पापो नित्यं विश्वासघातकः ॥ ३४ ॥
English Translation
He is a thorough rogue and hypocrite, vicious and faultfinding; otherwise why does he put obstacles before others, depending for his strength only on the beauties of the Apsarās or heavenly prostitutes.
Ch 3 Verse 35 Verse

नमुचिर्निहतो येन कृत्वा सन्धिं दुरात्मना । शपथान्विविधानादौ कृत्वा भीतेन छद्मना ॥ ३५ ॥
English Translation
He is treacherous to his very core; therefore he, being afraid at the very outset, took oaths, and entered into agreement with the high-souled Namuchi; afterwards, when his time turned favourable, that villain broke his treaty and treacherously killed him.
Ch 3 Verse 36 Verse

विष्णुस्तु कपटाचार्यः कुहकः शपथाकरः । नानारूपधरः कामं बलकृद्दम्भपण्डितः ॥ ३६ ॥
English Translation
Again the powerful Viṣṇu is a thorough master of treachery and hypocrisy, the mine in taking oaths and can only show his vanity and is expert in that. He can assume many forms at will by his Magic power.
Ch 3 Verse 37 Verse

कृत्वा कोलाकृतिं येन हिरण्याक्षो निपातितः । हिरण्यकशिपुर्येन नृसिंहेन च घातितः ॥ ३७ ॥
English Translation
For these very reasons Viṣṇu had to take the form of a boar and kill Hiraṇyākṣa; and again he had to take up a man-lion form to kill Hiraṇya Kaśīpu.
Ch 3 Verse 38 Verse

नाहं तद्वशगो नूनं भवेयं दनुनन्दनाः । विश्वासं नैव गच्छामि देवानां कुत्र कर्हिचित् ॥ ३८ ॥
English Translation
O Dānavas! Never shall I surrender myself to Viṣṇu, for I never place my trust in the words or deeds of Viṣṇu and his Devas.
Ch 3 Verse 39 Verse

किं करिष्यति मे विष्णुरिन्द्रो वा बलवत्तरः । रुद्रो वापि न मे शक्तः प्रतिकर्तुं रणाङ्गणे ॥ ३९ ॥
English Translation
What can Indra or Viṣṇu do against me, when the most powerful Rudra is not able to fight against me in the battle-field!
Ch 3 Verse 40-41 Verse

त्रिविष्टपं ग्रहीष्यामि जित्वेन्द्रं वरुणं यमम् । धनदं पावकं चैव चन्द्रसूर्यौ विजित्य च ॥ ४० ॥ यज्ञभागभुजः सर्वे भविष्यामोऽद्य सोमपाः । जित्वा देवसमूहञ्च विहरिष्यामि दानवैः ॥ ४१ ॥
English Translation
I will instantly defeat Indra, Varuṇa, Yama, Kuvera, Fire, Sun and Moon and get possession of their Heavens. On our conquering the Devas, we all shall get our share of Yajñas and we along with other Dānavas drink the Soma juice and enjoy ourselves in Heaven.
Ch 3 Verse 42 Verse

न मे भयं सुरेभ्यश्च वरदानेन दानवाः । मरणं न नरेभ्यश्च नारी किं मे करिष्यति ॥ ४२ ॥
English Translation
O Dānavas! I have got the boon; what do I now care for the Devas. My death is not from men too. What can a woman do to me?
Ch 3 Verse 43 Verse

पातालपर्वतेभ्यश्च समाहूय वरान्वरान् । दानवान्मम सैन्येशान्कुर्वन्तु त्वरिताश्चराः ॥ ४३ ॥
English Translation
O my emissaries! Call without any delay the chief Dānavas from the nether regions and the mountains and make them my generals?
Ch 3 Verse 44 Verse

एकोऽहं सर्वदेवेशान्विजेतुं दानवाः क्षमः । शोभार्थं वः समाहूय नयामि सुरसङ्गमे ॥ ४४ ॥
English Translation
O Dānavas! I can alone conquer all the Devas; only to make the war arrangements look nice, that I am taking you to defeat them.
Ch 3 Verse 45 Verse

शृङ्गाभ्यां च खुराभ्यां च हनिष्येऽहं सुरान्किल । न मे भयं सुरेभ्यश्च वरदानप्रभावतः ॥ ४५ ॥
English Translation
There is no fear of mine from the Devas, consequent on the boon conferred on me. I will kill them by my hoofs and horns.
Ch 3 Verse 46 Verse

अवध्योऽहं सुरगणैरसुरैर्मानवैस्तथा । तस्मात्सज्जा भवन्त्वद्य देवलोकजयाय वै ॥ ४६ ॥
English Translation
I am not to be killed by Suras, Asuras, as men; therefore get yourselves ready to conquer the Devas.
Ch 3 Verse 47 Verse

जित्वा सुरालयं दैत्या विहरिष्यामि नन्दने । मन्दारकुसुमापीडा देवयोषित्समन्विताः ॥ ४७ ॥
English Translation
O Dānavas! After conquering the Heavens we will be garlanded with Pārijāta wreaths and we will enjoy the Deva women in the Nandana Garden.

कामधेनुपयोत्सिक्ताः सुधापानप्रमोदिताः । देवगन्धर्वगीतादिनृत्यलास्यसमन्विताः ॥ ४८ ॥
English Translation
We will drink the milk of the heavenly milching cow (the cow that yields all desires) and, intoxicated with the heavenly drinks, we will hear and see the music and singing the dancing of the Gandarbhas there.

उर्वशी मेनका रम्भा घृताची च तिलोत्तमा । प्रमद्वरा महासेना मिश्रकेशी मदोत्कटा ॥ ४९ ॥
English Translation
You will all be served there with various bottles of wine by Urvasī, Menakā, Rambhā, Ghritācī, Tillottamā, Pramadvarā Mahāsenā, Mira Kesī, Madotkatā,
Ch 3 Verse 50 Verse

विप्रचित्तिप्रभृतयो नृत्यगीतविशारदाः । रञ्जयिष्यन्ति वः सर्वान्नानासवनिषेवणैः ॥ ५० ॥
English Translation
Viprachitti and others. Then be all ready at once for this auspicious occasion to march to Heavens and fight there with the Suras.

सर्वे सज्जा भवन्त्वद्य रोचतां गमनं दिवि । सङ्ग्रामार्थं सुरैः सार्धं कृत्वा मङ्गलमुत्तमम् ॥ ५१ ॥ रक्षणार्थं च सर्वेषां भार्गवं मुनिसत्तमम् । समाहूय च सम्पूज्य स्थाप्य यज्ञे गुरुं परम् ॥ ५२ ॥
English Translation
And be pleased to call that pure-souled Muni Śukrācārya, the son of Bhṛgu and the Guru of the Daityas and worship him and tell him to perform sacrificial ceremonies for the safety and victory of the Dānavas.

सेनानीश्चिक्षुरस्तस्य महावीर्यो मदोत्कटः । धनाध्यक्षस्तथा ताम्रः सेनायुतसमावृतः ॥ ३ ॥
English Translation
Dānavas, the wicked Mahiṣa went to his abode, with gladness. Here ends the Third Chapter of the Fifth Book on the Daitya armies getting ready in Śrī Mad Devī Bhāgavatam, the Mahāpurāṇam by Maharṣi Vedavyāsa of 18,000 verses.
